Since the launch of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces expanding in influence within Dol-Makjar.
Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season follow below.
The Warrior Group Introduced
The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of heroes who will split off from the main group to undertake their own adventure, apart from the additional parties.
This warrior group features Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie).
Why Split the Party?
Given an extensive roster, it was clear from the start that maintaining everyone at the same party would be impossible.
That’s why, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Prelude, intertwining the individual narratives before dividing into three distinct groups: Fighters, Planners, and Seekers.
What Defines the Combat Party
According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who enjoy a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.
Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric the cleric might seem out of place, but the developments of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are perfectly fit for the combat party.
Motivations for Departure
First, the group knows exactly where to go next after a brutal first encounter with the antagonists.
A former ally of the deceased character—whose passing started the campaign’s events—exploited The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, invading the hidden lair, attacking Thimble, and taking all the enchanted items to dispose of.
The antagonist then settled his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in the northern region, beyond the urban center, with Cyd close behind.
Personal Motivations
Secondly, each character has a personal reason to depart the urban setting:
- The rogue, as the close ally and best friend, seeks retribution.
- Kattigan has experience in Timmony and cautions that it is a nasty location.
- Tyranny and The healer, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to execute Teor and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
- However, their reputation as key figures in House Halovar could help the group access locations they usually can’t.
- Furthermore, The fighter vowed a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his deliverance and will now go with him everywhere.
Fugitives
Lastly, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making staying in the city dangerous:
- The agile adventurer and The hero are known criminals.
- Tyranny and The cleric turned against House Halovar and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
- The fighter is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.
This leaves them few options but to journey toward Timmony in search of the antagonist.
What’s Next?
According to episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table will not appear the following episode, leaving the other eight cast members to round up the Questers and Planners parties.
Viewers can anticipate finding out which adventurers will be in which group in the season’s last Overture episode, released on October 24.
