Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
